Weekly workshops now allow online sign-up. visit www.kern.courts.ca.gov and select the "family law" tab at the top of the page. Then, select "workshop schedule" on the left side of the page.
The award winning Law Day event will take place in the Valley Plaza Mall in front of JC Penney and Wetzels Pretzels. The event will go from 10AM to 7PM, and there will be attorneys available for consultations from 12PM to 6PM. Arrive early to sign up for a FREE 15 minute attorney consultation. Space is limited and sign up is first-come, first-serve. The attorneys that volunteer have a wide range of knowledgel, ranging from: Custody, Guardianship, Probate, Wills, Civil Lawsuits, Landlord/Tenant Issues, Criminal Law, Real Property, Immigration, Animal Rights and much more! Just come with your questions ready. Keep in mind that you may be limited to 1 subject as the consultations are limited to 15 minutes. From 10AM to 7PM, there will be booths for local organizations with representatives passing out information and answering questions on how they can help you. Information on getting assistance with Mediation, Child Support, Guardianship, and much more will be available from these organizations. Whether you have specific questions, need general information, or are just curious, Law Day at the Mall will provide information to answer your questions or point you in the right direction.

There is a telephone scam spreading through several counties threatening those who fail to report to jury duty with arrest fines. It is an Iphone app that advises people their name has been seen at a local court location and they are instructed to call the following number: (704)319-7242. A recording at the number advises the caller to press 1 to pay a $500 fine or to press 3 to report to jail.

Self Help Assistance Telephone assistance is limited. We can answer simple questions over the phone but do not perform legal research and contact with an answer. Email assistance is limited too. We try our best to respond to email questions sent to us in a timely matter. However, our walk-in customers are our first priority.

The Shriver Program helps landlords and tenants. It is located on the first floor of the courthouse at 1415 Truxtun Ave. (to the right when you enter the building) The current hours are Monday-Thursday 8:30-4:00 (closed 12:00-1:00 for lunch)
Law day at the mall will be held on May 1st from 10:00am to 7:00pm. There will be representatives from the various bakersfield legal organizations as well as attorneys present for free consultations. The consultations will be limited to 15 minutes a person, and they will begin at 1:00pm (first come first serve). The Law Library staff will be participating in law day, so the library will be closed on Tuesday, May 1st. Please come join us!
